Photocopies of three letters written by Hemenway to his cousin, Mary Jane Whitmore Bliss of Spring Prairie, Wis. The 1859 letter describes his living arangements as a University of Wisconsin student and the transition in chancellors from John Lathrop to Professor Henry Barnard. The 1860 letter, written while a medical student in Chicago, describes his meeting Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln and his difficulty studying with a Negro musical show performing nearby.

Mary Ann Todd Lincoln was the wife of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. She served as First Lady from 1861 until his assassination in 1865 at Ford’s Theatre. Daughter of Eliza Parker and Robert Smith Todd, pioneer settlers of Kentucky, Mary lost her mother before the age of seven.
